Pixel 4 XL leaked photo reveals two back cameras and hole-punch

Oh, and the fingerprint reader might be in the display.
The next Google Pixel might be getting more cameras and a sleek design overhaul. According to a leaked photo posted on the site SlashLeaks on Wednesday, the Pixel 4 XL will have two cameras on the back instead of the single one found on the Pixel 2 XL and 3 XL.
Famously Google has had only a single rear camera on every Pixel model large and small. The company embraced using AI and machine learning to create photos that rival phones with two rear cameras like the iPhone XS or three back cameras like the Huawei P20 Pro. A second camera could be used for something other than photography like perhaps AR.
The drawings of the unreleased 4 XL also show an oval hole-punch display for two selfie cameras like on the new Galaxy S10 Plus. Famously, the Pixel 3 lacks a notch while the Pixel 3 XL has one of the largest found on any phone.
Curious enough the drawing doesn't show a fingerprint reader on the back. This omission could indicate that the next Pixel phone will have an in-screen fingerprint reader like the OnePlus 6T and Galaxy S10.
Of course, the drawing hasn't been verified so it should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, it's still fun to think about.
Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

If I Can Get Everything, Choices Don't Matter

I was only about 10 hours into The Division 2, a game that I expect I will play for dozens of hours when I realized something about the perks in the game. I was going to be able to unlock them all easily once I hit level 30 and the final perks became available to grab. Suddenly, I didn’t care about what I picked. These perks became a checklist that I barely thought about. By giving me the option to get everything, I stopped caring about any of the options at all. Games, stop doing this.
It is wild how quickly I went from planning which perks I would grab to literally just unlocking them in order from first to last in the menu. I knew that I would probably be able to unlock most of them if not all of them eventually, but having that moment happen so early and be so apparent completely killed any interest I had in that part of The Division 2. This isn’t the first game where I’ve encountered this same issue.
Fallout 4 was another game where I realized I could eventually unlock nearly every perk if I played enough. Just like that, my idea of working on a specific build evaporated. Unlocking a perk became less exciting and eventually, I would even forget to unlock new perks and let them build up before remembering that, “Oh yeah I have some perks to assign.”
It’s just hard to care about picking specific perks or abilities when it becomes clear you will get them all. Sure, early on I still focused on certain things, although eventually, I stopped caring because I was just going to get them all anyway. The more recent Far Cry games also have this issue. I usually get more health or combat moves first, however towards the end of the game, I’m just randomly picking stuff without much thought.
By letting players unlock everything, the game robs the player of any meaningful choices in how to build up your character. But it also makes it harder for me to remember what I even have unlocked. I feel like some of the perks I have in Fallout 4 I completely ignored because I didn’t think about them when I unlocked them. Same with other games that let me get every skill.
Compare this to the feeling of leveling up your character in something like Fallout New Vegas.
In that game, I would plan out builds. I would do mental math in my head to figure out how many SPECIAL points I should assign in combination with a later perk to max out a stat I cared about. I would have to make hard choices to really get a skill or strong perk. I also remember getting really excited when I leveled up. It was a few more points I could spread across my build. Each new perk or skill I gained felt memorable too and to this day I still remember certain characters I created and how much fun or how terrible they were.
In contrast, I’ve never felt compelled to create a new character in Fallout 4because eventually, they will end up with all the perks as my original character.
I understand that part of the reason games like The Division 2 have unlockable skills and perks is to give players a sense of progression. Yet, if everyone and every character ends up in the same place I feel like that does a disservice to that feeling of progression.
In The Division 2 I also became less motivated to explore and grab some of the in-game items because I didn’t need them. I don’t require any more SHD Tech, the tokens used to unlock perks because I’m already drowning in them and have nothing to unlock. Maybe future updates will add more perks or ways to use SHD Tech yet, for now, I’m stockpiling something that feels worthless.
Good choices in video games aren’t about offering you something, but about making you choose to sacrifice something. Yeah, you can take this perk to gain more ammo capacity, though you will miss out on this perk that gives you more accuracy. MOBAs actually do a great job each match of pushing the player into picking things and making important choices.
I wish more games would see the value in limiting players and making them think about their choices.

Galaxy A90 with 'Notchless Infinity Screen' confirmed by Samsung website

If there isn't a notch, where do the front-facing cameras go?
Samsung has been on a roll showcasing different display options for phones. Famously the Galaxy Fold stole the show at the company's Unpacked event in February with a screen that folds in half. The Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10E use a hole-punch cutout in the display to house the selfie camera. And now it seems the upcoming Galaxy A90 will feature a screen without a notch or a hole-punch.
On Thursday, Dutch site Galaxy Club found a mention of the Galaxy A90's "Notchless Infinity Display" on the Indonesian version of Samsung's website. The text is curiously found in a footnote next to a photo of a Galaxy phone (A30 or A50) that has a display notch. There is also a sub header that reads, "Sub headline text" that could indicate that the page wasn't meant to go live yet.
Rumors in February indicated that the Galaxy A90 would have a pop-up camera instead of using a notch like last year's Vivo Nex. Technically the Galaxy S8 and S9 both had Infinity Displays without notches, but there were bezels on the top and bottom of the phone.
The Galaxy A90 is expected to launch at a Samsung event on April 10. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft Turns To Google To Improve Vital Windows 10 Software

Microsoft’s work to rebuild its Edge browser to run with Chromiumcontinues, and this week The Verge “secured an exclusive first look at the early work”. Tom Warren writes:
While the previously leaked screenshots made Edge look very similar to Chrome, Microsoft is adding its own touches and animations to make it look and feel like a Windows browser.
…Most of the user interface of the browser is a mix of Chrome and Edge, and Microsoft has clearly tried to add its own little touches here and there. There’s a read aloud accessibility option, and it simply reads the page out loud like it does in existing versions of Edge. Some features that you’d expect from Edge are missing, though. Microsoft hasn’t implemented its set aside tabs feature just yet, and write on the web with a stylus isn’t available. A dark mode is only available via a testing flag right now.
One end result of the project is that Edge will use the same open-source rendering engine that is found in Google’s Chrome Browser. Given Microsoft’s focus on software and services, switching to the same rendering engine as the vast majority of the market makes sense from a commercial and a compatibility point of view.
Using the same rendering engine means less testing is required (although that is dependant on how fast the older engine can be replaced on users’ own hardware) which will reduce costs - a reduction that will more noticeable over time. It also reduces development costs as major new features can be targeted at Chromium powered only, helping the update cycle, but also targeting users who live inside Google’s own Chrome browser.
That should leave more resources available to develop better commercial offerings, rather than testing and ensuring compatibility over a number of browser rendering engines.
Practically users should not see any difference in the browser. It will still be Edge, it will still have the same look and feel, but it will have better compatibility and the ability to run Chrome-based extensions.

Halo's PC ports won't require Windows 10

And other info about the games
343 Industries hosted an AMA on Reddit for the upcoming Halo: Master Chief Collection PC ports yesterday and clarified a bunch of info on the titles. For one, Windows 10 will not be required to run the games, which might be a huge boon for some users. As well as that, 343 is looking into the possibility of including mod support for the games, which is what has kept Halo: Custom Edition going all these years.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun has compiled a list of all the good and bad news, so I'll just summarize some of their points. In the good column, we have the Windows 7 support and the ability for Windows Store and Steam players to verse each other. Uncapped framerates will be available, though there may be a certain upper limit for particular game modes. Variable FOV sliders will be an option as well as support for different aspect ratios (including 21:9 ultrawide). New anti-cheat measures will be in effect, which should make for a smooth online experience.
In the bad column, Xbox versus PC support is not currently on the cards (which was discussed yesterday). Split-screen is apparently not coming either, which is a big bummer. While the majority of Halo games are coming to PC, Halo 5 is still absent and will not be included in these new ports. No dedicated servers are coming, but 343 is looking at incorporating those later down the line. Finally, ODST's "Firefight" mode won't be available at launch but may come later.
Somehow, the subject of pricing never came up. 343 did state that a complete bundle will be available once every port is ready, but there is no word on whether or not the games will cost significantly less to make up for their staggered releases. For that matter, there isn't a time frame for release, though I'd imagine at least a few games will make a 2019 window.
Even with those few drawbacks, it seems like 343 is taking these ports very seriously. If done correctly, these could be the definitive versions of the Halo titles that fans have been begging for. While I'm not exactly big on the series, I'm champing at the bit for Reach on PC. If 343 can get that right, I'll be happy.

How to Prioritize App Downloads in iOS

I feel a little bad for not knowing about this previously, but that’s part of the fun of iOS: There’s always some random new thing, like the how-to-move-many-apps-at-once trick, that pops up on one’s geeky radar from time to time.
Here’s the deal. If you’re downloading a bunch of apps—either you went crazy on the App Store or there are a ton of updates for apps already installed on your iPhone or iPad—you don’t have to sit there and let your device decide which app downloads first.
Perhaps the app you really want to use is low in the download queue, but by tapping “Update All,” you’ve ensured it’s grayed out and unusable until the update completes. That, or as my colleague Virginia suggested, perhaps you’re about to lose your connection on the train or subway and you want to make sure you can use your favorite app (or just-purchased app) while you’re offline.
If your device supports 3D Touch, simply force-press on a grayed-out app to activate a context menu, and tap on the “Prioritize Download” option.
That’s it. Be sure to gloat when you’re around friends with non-3D-Touch devices, like the iPhone XR, as they will be unable to mess with their device’s download queue. (You would think that those lacking 3D Touch on their devices would be able to just long-press to activate the same context menu, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.)

Hey, Windows 7 users: Would a free Windows 10 upgrade make you switch?

Would another free Windows 10 upgrade window tempt you away from Windows 7?
With Windows 7 fast approaching end of life, the remaining hundreds of millions of users still on that OS should seriously be considering an alternative. There's Windows 8, Windows 10, Linux, or even the Mac route if you're feeling up for extreme change. Remaining on Windows 7 is a terrible idea, because after January 14 you will no longer be protected from any new vulnerabilities that are discovered, and over time, even apps will stop supporting Windows 7 as well.
I think it's wise for most Windows 7 users to switch to Windows 10 at this point. While many Windows 7 PCs on the market today likely won't run well with Windows 10, there are plenty out there today that would. So, I wonder, would those users be willing to take advantage of another free Windows 10 upgrade window? Microsoft pushed Windows 10 hard at launch in 2015, offering it free of charge on the desktops of millions of people.
The upgrade window was limited, however, and after many months the free upgrade went away. Microsoft already said it won't be opening the free upgrade window again, meaning if Windows 7 users want to upgrade to Windows 10, they will have to pay for a full license to update. Many Windows 7 users at the time were extremely unhappy that Microsoft was pushing Windows 10 so hard with popups that wouldn't go away and System Tray icons that remained in place permanently.
If Microsoft were to offer Windows 10 again, it'd have to be way less forceful about the whole thing. A single popup, detailing that Windows 7 is running out of time, and that Microsoft is graciously offering its hand to help once again with a free upgrade to Windows 10. If the user rejects it, that offer goes away and is gone forever. If you're running Windows 7, would you be willing to take advantage of another free Windows 10 upgrade window, assuming your PC could handle it?
If you choose to remain on Windows 7, your PC becomes a huge target and security risk after January 14. I think there will still be millions of Windows 7 users after support ends, and I'm sure attackers will want to take advantage of that. On Windows 10, heck, even on Windows 8, you'll be safe from that. According to Net Market Share, Windows 7 still accounts for 40 percent of the PC market, with Windows 10 on around 37 percent of PCs. Microsoft has already publicly stated that Windows 10 is in use on 800 million devices, meaning there are hundreds of millions still on Windows 7.

Windows 10 version 1903 heads for the finish line

It's clear that Microsoft is in the very final stages of development of Windows 10 version 1903, the April 2019 Update. The fast distribution ring has seen two builds arrive this week after two last week, bringing with them no new features but a slowly whittled-down bug list following the development pattern we've seen in previous updates. In the past, the company has tried to release Windows 10 feature upgrades on Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of each month, meaning there's just under three weeks left to go.
A little alarmingly, a couple of long-standing issues with the release still appear to be unresolved. A green-screen-of-death error caused when games with BattlEye anti-cheat software are used has been a feature of the 1903 previews for many months, and Microsoft is still listing it as unresolved. The scope and impact of this bug was so significant that the slow distribution ring didn't receive a preview of 1903 for much of its development process; Microsoft felt that it was too likely to affect too many people to be usable. This is eminently plausible, as BattlEye is used by PUBG and Fortnite, among other games. The company finally relented in February, pushing out a new build on the slow ring but blacklisting any systems with the offending third-party software.
The bug was first listed as a known issue with build 18298, released on December 10 last year. Microsoft says it's working with BattlEye to resolve the problem, but there has been no visible progress so far. BattlEye boasts of using a kernel-mode component as part of its anti-cheat software. Running in the kernel means that it's harder for cheat software to hide from or otherwise interfere with what BattlEye does, but with this comes the temptation to mess with operating system data structures and functions that aren't documented, which then leads to system crashes when the operating system is updated.
Similarly, a second long-standing bug is still ominously appearing on the list of known defects—Creative X-Fi sound cards are (vaguely) "not functioning properly." This problem has been around almost as long as the BattlEye issue; it was first listed as a known flaw in build 18305, released on December 19 last year. As with the BattlEye issue, Microsoft says that it's working with the third party responsible—in this case Creative—to address the problem. But it has also been three months, with no apparent sign of any resolution.
At some point, something's gotta give. It seems unlikely that Microsoft would be willing to roll back whatever kernel changes were made that are upsetting BattlEye; doing so at this stage would arguably undermine and invalidate much of the preview testing that has taken place for this release. The extended period without a slow release already means that this testing is going to be a bit thinner than has been the case for previous feature upgrades. On the other hand, a feature upgrade that breaks PUBG and Fortnite isn't likely to fly, either.
Microsoft really needs a feature update that's problem-free and deployed without incident as the first step toward rebuilding confidence in the company's development and update processes. If Creative and BattlEye can't get their houses in order, it seems that Redmond is going to have to wait a little longer for its trouble-free release.

Apple's AirPower wireless charging mat looks like it's arriving very soon

More signs that Apple is preparing to release the AirPower charging mat have surfaced, after changes to references in how wireless charging were found in the sixth iOS 12.2 developer beta mentioned the charging of multiple devices simultaneously.
AirPower, Apple's long-delayed wireless charging mat capable of recharging up to three devices at the same time, is speculated to arrive in the first half of 2019 at some point. While not confirmed as arriving soon by Apple itself, there are more indications that Apple is building support for the accessory into its products.
It is currently believed that an iPhone charging on the AirPower mat will show a 3D animation of all devices on the mat on its display, including indicators for charging status when they start recharging. References in the wireless charging section of the operating system's code in the sixth iOS 12.2 developer beta have been found to enable the graphics.
Apple typically includes changes to code in its betas to enable future features as part of its testing process, and sometimes this includes supporting unannounced devices. The change, reported by 9to5Mac, is probably one of the clearest signs AirPower is on the way, and potentially quite soon.
As to when it would actually be launched, it is probable that Apple will not ship AirPower before it releases iOS 12.2 to the public. As the developer beta has reached its sixth generation of builds, it's possible to happen within days, or the next few weeks.
AirPower has had a rocky journey to its release, following Apple's initial unveiling of it in December 2017and claims it would launch in 2018. Rumors pointed to a release in March, but to no avail, which then turned into a September launch that also didn't happen.
In September, Apple seemingly wiped almost all mentions of AirPower from its website, leading to speculation it was either delayed or abandoned altogether. There were suggestions Apple had trouble implementing the technology to enable multi-device charging while remaining within the Qi standard, but the supply chain and rumors started back up again saying the project wasn't cancelled at all.

Apple Upgrades iMac and iMac Pro: More Cores, More Graphics, More Memory

Apple has introduced its updated iMac all-in-one desktop computers to use Intel's latest generation processors with up to eight cores plus AMD’s latest Pro graphics, and its iMac Pro to be equipped with more memory and a faster GPU. Since Apple upgrades its iMac product line every couple of years or so, the company has every right to claim that its top-of-the-range AIO PCs are now up to twice faster than their predecessors.
The new 21.5-inch and 27-inch Apple iMac AIO desktops come in the same sleek chassis as their predecessors and use the same 4K and 5K display panels featuring the P3 color gamut and 500 nits brightness. The systems are offered with Intel’s latest Core processors paired with up to 32 GB of DDR4-2666 memory, SSD storage or a hybrid Fusion Drive storage (comprising of NAND flash used for caching and a mechanical HDDs), and a discrete AMD Radeon Pro GPU. Optionally, customers can equip their new iMacs with Intel’s eight-core Core i9 as well as AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB GPU.
Since the new Apple iMac AIO desktops inherit quite a lot from their ancestors, they feature the same set of I/O capabilities, including a 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth adapter, a GbE port, two Thunderbolt 3 connectors, four USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, an SDXC card reader, a 3.5-mm audio jack, built-in speakers, and a webcam.
Apple’s latest 21.5-inch iMac with Intel’s quad-core Core i3 “Coffee Lake” processor and AMD’s Radeon Pro 555X 2 GB graphics adapter will start at $1,299. Meanwhile, a more advanced 21.5-inch iMac with Intel’s six-core Core i5 chip and AMD’s Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB graphics will start at $1,499.
Apple’s 27-inch iMacs with Intel’s six-core Core i5 CPUs will cost from $1,799 to $2,299 depending on the configuration. Once upgraded to Intel’s eight-core Core i9, AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB, and 16 GB RAM, the price of the system will increase to $3,349.
Also updated is the iMac Pro, which uses Intel's Xeon-W line of processors. The biggest jump in this line of products is the DRAM capacity, with Apple now offering a 256 GB DDR4 option. In order to get this option, users will have to pay an extra +$5200 above the cost of the default 32 GB configuration, which a number of users have voiced is a lot of money, considering the equivalent 4x64 GB memory layout can be purchased for around $2500. Also offered is an upgrade to the Radeon Pro Vega 64X, although details on what this card has (aside from 64 compute units) has not been disclosed at this point. Based on the '12 TF Single Precision' metric on the Apple Store, it appears that the frequency has increased by 9% over the '11 TF Single Precision' Radeon Pro Vega 64 model. The price difference between the two is $150.
A fully kitted out iMac Pro now stands at $15700, with an 18-core Xeon-W, Vega 64X, 256GB of DDR4 ECC memory, and a 4TB SSD. The base model is $4999, and comes with an 8-core Xeon-W, Vega 56, 32 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, and a 1TB SSD.

How stable is the first Android Q beta?

It’s always fun when Google releases a new version of Android. There are tons of new features and visual tweaks to dig into, as well as under-the-hood improvements to make our phones run better. The downside? These early developer previews are buggy and not necessarily ready for consumer use (hence the term “developer”).
I’ve been running the first Android Q beta on my Pixel 2 XL since its launch on March 13, 2019. How stable has Android Q been so far? Should you install it? Read on to find out.
Android Q beta bugs, stability, and battery life
This early preview of Android Q is actually more stable than the very first alpha developer preview we got with Android Pie last year. That doesn’t mean it’s all sunshine and roses, though.
The first big issue I’ve run into is poor battery life. This is to be expected on a developer preview so I’m not complaining here. I used to get about four hours of screen-on time on stable Android 9 Pie, but now it’s more like two hours. Standby time is nothing to complain about, but the phone sucks battery when I’m actually using it.
On the plus side, there are benefits to using battery saver mode on Android Q. Now, enabling the mode gives the phone a full, system-wide dark theme that turns your quick settings panel, settings menu, and notifications to black. It’s pretty awesome. Check out the video below to see what I mean.
Full disclosure, my Google Pixel 2 XL does have a Google Fi SIM card inside, so I am receiving messages and phone calls. I’ve also been using this phone to check out social media and answer email, however I haven’t trusted it enough to use as my main phone while I’m out running errands.
I’ve noticed a few inconsistencies with my location when using Google Maps or the trusted places feature in Smart Lock. Half the time my phone puts me at my exact location, half the time it’s a few blocks off.
I’ve also noticed a few random UI quirks, but nothing that makes the phone completely unusable.
Other known issues
Here are some other known issues in the first Android Q developer preview:
System and app performance is known to be periodically slow and janky, and devices may become occasionally unresponsive. These problems may become more acute with prolonged use.
Battery life may be regressed in this early release for screen-on and screen-off use cases.
Launcher icon visibility – In Android Q, the All apps tray displays a launcher icon for every package installed on the device, except for the following cases: System apps
Apps that don’t contain any components inside their respective manifest’s tag
Sharing a screenshot with the app directly from the system notification may result in a crash. To mitigate this, share your screenshot from the Files app.
If using a work profile, granting the Phone permission to the app may cause uploads to fail or crash the app. To mitigate this, disable or deny the Phone permission in the app settings.
Should you give Android Q a shot?
Yes, but we’d suggest installing it only if you have a secondary smartphone.
While the Android Q beta does seem stable enough right now, poor battery life and wonky GPS reliability are keeping me from switching my main SIM card over to my Pixel 2 XL. Your mileage will vary of course, but don’t be surprised if you run into any jankiness along the way.
The good news is that you won’t have to wait long for the Android Q beta to be improved. Google is releasing a total of six beta updates between now and the final release in Q3 2019. We’ll update this article again when the second beta arrives in early April.
Beta 1 (initial release, beta, March 13, 2019)
Beta 2 (incremental update, beta, early April 2019)
Beta 3 (incremental update, beta, early May 2019, likely coinciding with Google I/O)
Beta 4 (final APIs and official SDK, Play publishing, beta, early June 2019)
Beta 5 (release candidate for testing Q3 2019)
Beta 6 (release candidate for final testing Q3 2019)
Final release to AOSP and ecosystem (Q3 2019)
We want to hear from you. How stable has the first Android Q developer preview been for you? Cast your vote in the poll below, and speak up in the comments if you’ve experienced any bugs or battery life issues

Inductive Apple Pencil charging tech reportedly too expensive for 2019 iPad Air & mini

Addressing questions as to why the 2019 iPad Air and mini don't support the second-generation Apple Pencil, a report on Tuesday claimed the required inductive technology was too costly to include in the builds.
The "inductive charging data port" for connecting a second-generation Pencil is "expensive enough to be prohibitive for the new Air and Mini," Daring Fireball's John Gruber said. While only indicating he was "reliably informed" on the matter, Gruber is known to have deep industry contacts.
The second-generation Pencil has a few advantages over the first, but the main one is typically considered the ability to magnetically attach to a 2018 iPad Pro, solving both charging and storage. It's not compatible with any other iPad.
Beyond inductive technology, the updated Air and mini would have also had to be redesigned with flat magnetic edges. Alternately, Apple could have added a Lightning port to the newer Pencil, but that would have left the problem of having a removable cap that's easily lost.
The latest iPads are largely performance upgrades with few major changes. Enhancements include a 10.5-inch display on the Air, A12 processors, True Tone displays, up to 256 gigabytes of storage, and first-gen Apple Pencil support.

Apple lowers price of SSD upgrades for Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro

In addition to upgrading the iMac and iMac Pro this morning, Apple has also quietly lowered select upgrade costs. For the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro, SSD upgrades are now slightly cheaper, while RAM upgrades for Mac Pro have also seen a price drop.
For the base model MacBook Air, users can now upgrade to the 1.5TB SSD for $1,100, which is down from the original upgrade price of $1,200. The 256GB and 512GB SSD upgrades remain unchanged at $200 and $400 respectively. These changes were first spotted by MacRumors.
For the upgraded MacBook Air that comes with 256GB as a base option, the 1.5TB SSD upgrade is now $900, down from $1,000. The 512GB upgrade remains at $200.
Meanwhile, for the Mac mini, the 2TB SSD upgrade is the one seeing the price drop. For the base Mac mini, the 2TB upgrade will now cost you $1,400, down $200 from its original price. The 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB upgrades are unchanged at $200, $400, and $800 respectively.
For the upgraded Mac mini, the 2TB SSD is now $1,200, which is down $200.
Rounding out the SSD upgrade price drops is the MacBook Pro. For the base model 13-inch, the 2TB SSD upgrade is now $200 cheaper at $1,200. The high-end 13-inch MacBook Pro can now be upgraded to 2TB SSD for $1,000, also a $200 price drop.
For the base model 15-inch MacBook Pro, you can now upgrade to the 2TB SSD for $1,200, whereas it previously ran $1,400. The 4TB SSD upgrade is $400 cheaper today at $3,000. For the upgraded 15-inch MacBook Pro, the 2TB upgrade is $1,000, while the 4TB upgrade is $2,800.
Last but not least, the 2013 Mac Pro RAM upgrade is slightly cheaper. Users can now upgrade to 64GB of RAM for $800. That’s a $400 drop compared to the original upgrade price of $1,200. Apple is expected to launch a new modular Mac Pro later this year, though.
Apple overhauled the internals of its iMac and iMac Pro this morning. The iMac added new 6-core and 8-core CPUs and Radeon Pro Vega graphics options, while the iMac Pro added a new 256GB RAM option.

Huawei P30 Pro press renders leak, Samsung reportedly providing OLED display

Huawei is getting ready to launch its latest generation of flagship smartphones in the P30 family. Today, we’re getting new official-looking press renders of both the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro, as well as rumors of Samsung providing the display component.
Courtesy of the folks at MySmartPrice, we’ve got a fresh look at both of Huawei’s upcoming devices in high-quality press renders that hide no details. As detailed in past leaks, we can see the difference between these two devices coming down to the rear camera arrays, including the zoom sensor on the Huawei P30 Pro.
Further, the Pro has slimmer bezels with curved glass at the edges where as the Huawei P30 opts for thicker bezels and flat glass. Both have sizeable displays and small, centered notches as well.
Both of these displays are also reportedly AMOLED panels, and according to a source out of China (via GSMArena), Samsung will be providing them. This is a welcome change from the Mate 20 Pro, which sourced displays from LG. Huawei encountered many issues with those panels, so this is likely a change for the best.

How to set up emergency location sharing on Android and iOS

Smartphones are spectacular for snapping photos, scanning the news, and sending messages, but they can also be literal lifesavers if you take the time to set them up before the need arises.
Both Android and iOS have easy-to-use systems for sharing your location with a friend, family member, or other trusted contact in an emergency. You can even create connections that’ll allow you to check up on loved ones to see if their phone has detected movement lately and then request an automated location update if you’re unable to reach them.
The key to all of this is to configure your emergency system ahead of time so it’ll be available in case an actual emergency occurs. Take two minutes now, and then rest easy knowing your phone’s ready.
THE SIMPLE OPTION FOR IOS
If you’ve got an iPhone, Apple offers a built-in Emergency SOS system that gives you a quick way to call 911 (or the equivalent emergency service provider) and then alert a group of predefined emergency contacts — all in one fell swoop.
To start, you need to tell your phone who your emergency contacts are:
Open the Health app.
Tap the “Medical ID” tab.
Tap “Edit.” (If you haven’t yet created a medical ID, you’ll need to do that first.)
Find the “Add emergency contact” option, and add however many people you want.
Now, if you’re ever in an emergency situation with an iPhone 8 or later:
Press and hold the power button along with either volume button, and you’ll see an “Emergency SOS” countdown appear on your screen.
Keep holding both buttons until the countdown ends.
Your iPhone will automatically call 911, and as soon as the call disconnects, the phone will text your emergency contacts with your current location.
If you have an iPhone 7 or earlier, press the power button five times fast, then drag your finger across the Emergency SOS slider that appears on the screen to initiate that same process.
THE SIMPLE OPTION FOR ANDROID
Android doesn’t have a similar all-in-one function, though it does provide a way to offer emergency services information about a preassigned emergency contact from the lock screen. While the setup may differ somewhat depending on what phone you have and which version of Android it runs, the basics should be the same.
Go to your phone’s lock screen. (You don’t have a screen lock set? Why not?)
Look for the word “Emergency” at the bottom of the lock screen. Tap on that.
Tap on “Emergency information” and then on the pencil symbol (or, depending on your phone, on “Add”). You’ll be asked to put in your PIN or lock pattern.
This will bring you to your Emergency information screen where you can add personal information (such as blood type or any existing medical conditions) and any contacts you want to be notified.
THE ADVANCED OPTION FOR ANDROID OR IOS
For a more robust setup in which you can share and request locations with trusted contacts — without needing to make a 911 call — download Google’s Trusted Contacts app for Android or iOS. Once you’ve signed in, create your list of connections.
Tap the “Add Contacts” box on the app’s main screen.
Find and tap the name of anyone you want to add.
Once that person has approved your request (and installed the app onto their phone as well), you’ll always be able to see if they’ve been active recently and also if their phone’s battery is critically low.
Then, if you ever want to send a location alert:
On the app’s main screen, select the person with whom you want to share your location.
Tap “Send location alert now.”
Your location will be shared for 24 hours or until you hit the “Stop” button.
And to request someone else’slocation:
Tap the person’s name on the app’s main screen.
Tap “Ask for [person’s] location.”
The app will alert the person to your request, and if they don’t respond within a set period of time, it’ll automatically share their location with you.
By default, Google’s Trusted Contacts app will share a requested location after five minutes without a response.
It’s the type of thing you hope you’ll never need, but with loved ones, in particular, it can bring valuable peace of mind to have it standing by just in case.

This smartphone maker put a selfie camera where no other phone maker has put one before

The Chinese smartphone maker ZTE's upcoming smartphone has a selfie camera that sticks out from the main body of the phone.
It's a novel design solution to avoid using the divisive notch that was popularized by Apple's iPhone X and adopted by numerous other Android phone makers.
Moving the selfie camera outside the main body of the phone has a few benefits, such as allowing more space for a larger battery and allowing for a full-screen display without interruptions from a notch.
It does, however, look unusual.
The Chinese smartphone maker ZTE is putting the selfie camera on its upcoming Axon V smartphone where no smartphone maker has put one before: outside the main body of the phone.
The ZTE Axon V hasn't been announced yet, but its unique design was posted on the website for iF Design World Guide, an organization that presents awards for design. It's unclear whether iF Design World Guide is giving ZTE an award. Business Insider has asked the organization for confirmation but hasn't heard back.
According to iF Design World Guide, the ZTE Axon V's protruding selfie camera allows for a full display without interruptions from the notch-style solution used by Apple and numerous other Android phone makers, or the hole-punch design now used by Samsung. The organization also said the design has other advantages, such as leaving more space for a bigger battery.
The iPhone XS has the notch, the Galaxy S10 has the hole-punch display, but we're still not sure what to call the protruding selfie camera on the ZTE Axon V. So far, the Business Insider tech desk has come up with the "tag" and the "fin."
Either way, ZTE's protruding camera design is the latest in the lineup of novel ideas to avoid the divisive notch that was popularized by the iPhone X.
ZTE apparently has another smartphone design in the works that avoids the divisive notch: the Axon S. In that design, the phone slides horizontally to reveal the selfie cam and main rear cameras. That phone was also featured on the iF Design World Guide website.

Apple Releases Sixth Developer Beta of iOS 12.2

Apple today seeded the sixth beta of an upcoming iOS 12.2 update to developers for testing purposes, one week after seeding the fifth beta of iOS 12.2 and two months after the release of iOS 12.1.4.
Registered developers can download the new iOS 12.2 beta from Apple's Developer Center or over-the-air once the proper configuration profile has been installed from the Developer Center.
iOS 12.2 will see the launch of a new subscription service within Apple News, which Apple is planning to unveil at an upcoming March 25 event. Apple plans to offer unlimited access to magazines and paywalled news services for a single monthly fee, with all of the content available through the News app.
iOS 12.2 expands Apple News to Canada for the first time, with Canadian iPhone and iPadusers able to read news stories in English, French, or both. Apple says that during the beta, content will be more limited than it will be when the update is released.
There are four new Animoji included the iOS 12.2 beta, including a boar, a shark, a giraffe, and an owl. Animoji can be used within the Messages and FaceTime apps.
The software introduces initial support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on third-party TVs in light of recent AirPlay 2 announcements, with a new option for limiting TV access joining the speaker access option in the Home app. There's also a redesigned TV remote in Control Center, and when paired with tvOS 12.2, you can ask Siri to play specific TV shows, movies, and music on your HomeKit devices like the Apple TV.
For some AT&T users, there's a new "5G E" icon for the cellular signal, replacing the standard LTE icon. This is a bit misleading of AT&T, because the iPhone does not support 5G, nor is the network AT&T calls 5G E actual 5G. Instead, it's an upgraded version of LTE, with more info available here.
The Wallet app's interface has been streamlined and tweaked because Apple is planning to introduce support for an Apple credit card that will be made available through a partnership with Goldman Sachs. The credit card could have unique features like rewards tracking, access to balance management tools, notifications about spending habits, and options to set spending limits.
The Downtime feature in Screen Time can be customized by day in iOS 12.2, Apple has made minor changes to some icons (including Apple News, AirPlay, and Remote in Control Center), audio messages are now better quality, and there are new Safari features, with a full list of changes introduced throughout the beta testing period available in our iOS 12.2 tidbits post.
Apple is improving Safari's privacy in iOS 12.2 through a new Motion & Orientation toggle located under Settings > Safari > Privacy >Security, which is disabled by default. The setting needs to be enabled on to allow websites to display content that relies on motion data from the accelerometer and gyroscope in the iPhone and iPad.
iOS 12.2 confirms that Apple is planning to release second-generation AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, thanks to a hidden "Hey Siri" AirPods setup screen in the beta. The inclusion of the AirPods setup option in the beta indicates that Apple could perhaps be planning to release new AirPods when iOS 12.2 is released. There have also been hints of additional work on AirPower, suggesting that product is still coming.
Apple plans to introduce the Apple News service at an event that will take place on March 25, and it's likely the company plans to release iOS 12.2 shortly afterwards to provide iOS users with access to the new subscription options.

How to Safely Opt Your Device Out of the Android Q Beta Program

While Google is letting users test out the upcoming Android Q through a public beta program, it’s not going to be for everyone. If you updated to the Android Q beta build and find your device has slowed down, that the battery isn’t as efficient, or that certain apps don’t run the way they’re supposed to (or at all), you’re not alone and chances are that you need to roll back to Android 9.
Performance issues and bugs like these are part of the tradeoff for getting early access to new software and features. Betas are meant to help developers find and solve problems, and to Google’s credit, the company is forthcoming about the potential shortcomings of opting into any of its beta programs.
The good news is that restoring your device to a stable version of Android 9 is actually quite easy. All it requires is a few button presses, then downloading and installing the update, and you’re done. The catch is that rolling back your device’s OS requires it to be reset to factory settings during the process, which wipes all your data and settings from the device. This is the opposite of upgrading to a new version of an OS, which keeps your files, apps, and other data largely intact. Luckily, Google makes it easy to create a backup of your data, then port it back to your phone after the rollback is finished.
If you want to leave the Android Q beta and go back to Android 9, here’s how to safely and properly back up your data and rollback your Android OS.
Creating a backup of your device’s data
The key to a smooth rollback is having a proper backup of your data. Android devices feature a built-in, Google Drive-based backup process that saves the following files and data:
Google Contacts data
Google Calendar events and settings
Wi-Fi networks and passwords
Wallpapers
Gmail settings
Apps downloaded from Play Store
Display settings
Language and input settings
Date and time
Some settings and data for apps not made by Google (varies by app)
This backup can then be imported automatically when setting up your device to restore most of your saved files, apps, and more. Ideally, you would have created a backup prior to installing the Android Q beta, but don’t sweat if you didn’t—we can still backup your data in Android Q beta before rolling back to Android 9. However, if you did make a backup prior to the beta, and are comfortable using that as your restore point, you can skip this section and jump to the rollback section below.
Before backing up, make sure the backup settings are enabled.
Open the settings app
Go to System > Advanced > Back up
Turn on the backup service
With the backup service turned on, it’s time to manually back up your device.
In the settings app, go to System > Advanced > Backup > Back up now
Tap “Continue”
Wait for the process to finish
You can find backups you’ve created by opening Google Drive on your device or PC and selecting the “Backups” tab from the menu on the left. Select the most recent backup from the list to see a general overview of what it contains.
It’s worth noting here that while the Backup setting saves most of your data, if you use apps downloaded from non-Google Play stores such as Amazon or have contacts on your device that aren’t connected to your Google account, you may need to manually back these files up as well before rolling back your phone.
To manually backup your Contacts:
Open the Contacts app.
Tap More > Settings > Export.
Choose which contacts to export.
Tap “Export to .VCF file.”
Upload this to your Google Drive or an external storage device (detailed below)
As for saving files from apps not associated with your Google account or that you downloaded from other app stores, the process can usually be done in the apps themselves but the steps will be app-specific. Consult the app’s store pages or official websites if you run into trouble. You can also manually upload files and folders to Google Drive.
Open Google Drive on your Android device.
In Google Drive, tap “Add” then “Upload”
Tap each of the files/folders you wish to backup
The other way is to connect the device to a PC via USB cable, opening the device’s storage location on your computer, then transferring the files to a storage location—whether that be an external storage device, cloud storage, or the PC itself.
Regardless of how you back up this data, you will also need to manually re-download these apps and import your contacts after you’ve completed the rollback update and restored your other device data.
How to opt out and rollback your device
Open the Android Q Beta page
Click or tap “View your eligible devices” (if you don’t see your device, make sure you are signed into the Google account linked to device(s) you wish to rollback).
Tap “Opt-out” on the devices listed you wish to remove from the beta program (Note: If you sideloaded the Android Q beta rather than installed it via OTA, the button may say “Opt-in” rather than Opt Out. You can still restore your device using the OTA method by tapping or clicking “Opt-in.” Wait a few minutes, refresh the page, and the option should now say “Opt-Out.”)
Your device will receive a new update within about 24 hours, though ours was almost immediate. Go to System > Advanced > System Update > Check for Update to see if the update is available. Otherwise, you will get a notification once it’s arrived.
Run the update once it’s ready.
During the installation, your device will be reset to factory settings and you’ll have to go through the initial setup process as you would for a device you just purchased. At one point in the setup, you will be asked to import your data. Select the option to import the backup file from Google Drive, then follow the on-screen instructions.
After the setup is complete, your data will slowly be restored and your old apps reinstalled.
If you manually backed up any data that needs to be imported, or need to re-download apps from other app stores, you can do so now.
