In one corner is the Asus ROG Swift PG35VQ and in the other corner you will find the Acer Predator X35, both of which will cost around $2500 at launch. There is a twist in this review from TechSpot, which has nothing to do with Nematics at all, seeing as how both of these monitors will use the exact same VA panel. The 35″ panel has an 1800R curvature, with ultrawide 3440×1440 resolution, HDR1000 support and up to a 200 Hz refresh rate with G-Sync Ultimate support.
This means the review focuses more on the implementation and the differences in the the software, OSD and stand design compare between Acer and ASUS models. If these prices are a bit high for your taste, there are a variety of similar displays with refresh rates between 100-144Hz for sale now.
The Acer Predator X35 packs the same specs as Asus' ROG PG35VQ which we recently called the best monitor we'd ever tested, because it uses the same panel. It's a 35-inch ultrawide 3440 x 1440 VA panel with up to a 200 Hz refresh rate, 1800R curvature, proper HDR and G-Sync Ultimate support.

The latest Oxygen OS 9.0.17 and 9.0.9 OTAs for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T include preparations for the full Android 10 upgrade — which could be as soon as late October.
While the reports out of China suggest that the Hydrogen OS variants will get Android 10 as soon as late October, there is still no official word on when the upgrade is set to extend globally. The Oxygen OS 9.0.17 and 9.0.9 updates were officially announced on the OnePlus forums with the changelog hinting at a not-too-distant release and almost confirming that we could see Android 10 on OnePlus 6 and 6Ts very soon.
The Oxygen OS OTAs are pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, mainly offering fixes for things like the Screen Recorder crashing and calling functions when networks have been reset. The most notable inclusion is the system performance improvements made ahead of what OnePlus notes as “later versions.”
There is no doubt this is referring to Oxygen OS 10.0 — which is the OnePlus version of Android 10. At 113 MB, it really isn’t the biggest OTA file in recent times, but this is clearly an important bridge between Android Pie and Android 10. You can see the full changelog below.

Amazon has unveiled a new and upgraded version of its Eero mesh Wi-Fi router system, at a much cheaper price than its first model, and offering even easier setup.

Amazon is also introducing two new security services with these new routers, Eero Secure and Eero Secure+, designed to safeguard the devices that connect to your network. The company hasn't yet revealed the specific features of each service at the time of writing, only that Secure+ offers on-the-go protections and control.
The company was much more excited to talk about how Alexa has been updated to offer voice-based Wi-Fi controls through Eero devices. Here are some of the commands you can expect:
“Alexa, pause the WiFi for dinner.”
“Alexa, turn on the guest WiFi.”
“Alexa, pause the Playstation WiFi.”
Amazon promises to make these Alexa features available to a number of routers from other manufacturers in the future, particularly Asus and TP-Link routers later this year, with support for Arris and Linksys devices coming early next year.
Now that it's available for less than Google Wifi, Amazon just made Eero a much more interesting proposition for a vast majority of would-be customers, especially given the addition of voice control. Whether this will spark a Wi-Fi war between Amazon and Google is yet to be seen, but we'd be willing to bet on it.

Intel Announces SSD 665p: Denser, Faster QLC NAND

Intel's Memory and Storage Day event today in South Korea was mostly focused on enterprise and datacenter products, but they did announce an upcoming consumer SSD: The Intel SSD 665p. This is the successor to the Intel 660p, the first and most successful consumer SSD to use four bit per cell (QLC) NAND flash memory. The 665p isn't a major update: it keeps the same Silicon Motion SM2263 4-channel controller but updates the NAND to Intel's second-generation 96-layer 3D QLC NAND. This newer QLC keeps the same 1024Gb per-die capacity while shrinking overall die size, so we don't expect any change to the range of drive capacities offered nor any major performance changes—but it may lower prices a bit.
Intel showed off the 665p with a live demo pitting the 1TB 660p against a 1TB 665p prototype with pre-production firmware, each installed in otherwise identical ASUS notebooks. Intel used a beta version of CrystalDiskMark 7 to illustrate the 665p's performance: 40-50% improvement to sequential transfer speeds and about 30% faster random access speeds.
Caveats: given the short test duration and relatively empty state of the drives, these numbers are measurements only of the SLC cache performance. It's not clear how much the worst-case write speeds to QLC have changed, and that's where the 660p falls far behind TLC based SSDs. The sequential IO numbers Intel showed for the 660p are also well below what we've measured with the 660p on our own testbed using CDM 7, so the sequential IO improvement might be more along the lines of 20% rather than 40-50%. Our testing of the Intel 660p also showed that it can reach similar speeds of 1.7-1.8GB/s in sequential transfers with a high enough queue depth, so the 665p's improvement here may amount to extending that performance down to queue depth 1. Either way, it looks like the 665p will be another drive that offers good enough performance for most use cases, but doesn't really need all four PCIe lanes.
Nathan Kirsch over at Legit Reviews has shared his close-up photos of the 665p alongside the 660p, so we know that the PCB layout is essentially unchanged: a single-sided M.2 2280 drive that only needs to populate all four NAND package locations for the 2TB model.
Intel hasn't shared the planned launch date for the 665p, but it should be no more than a few months away. Pricing should be comparable to the 660p, making it one of the cheapest consumer NVMe drives on the market.

You will soon be able to plug an Oculus Quest headset into a PC to play Rift games

Some nifty updates are headed to the Oculus Quest, the best VR headset in terms of bang-for-buck. In addition to hand and finger tracking set to arrive next year by way of a firmware update, in the more immediate future, you will soon be able to plug the Quest into a PC and play titles developed for the higher-end Rift headset.
The magic will happen through Oculus Link, special software to enable playing Rift games on the Quest. Once it rolls out, Quest owners will be able to plug the headset into a gaming PC via USB-C and play Rift games—this essentially transforms the Quest into a PC VR headset.
"For developers, this means it’s now possible to build high-end PC games and experiences while taking advantage of the biggest possible market and connecting with new audiences as the Quest community grows. Oculus Link is truly the best of both worlds: the high-end gaming of Rift when connected to a PC, with the ease and portability of Quest on-the-go," Oculus says.
That is an intriguing proposition for a $399 headset (and it puts the $399 Rift S in an awkward market position). Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says this should work with most USB-C cables, including the one that ships with the Quest, though Oculus also plans on releasing a "premium optical fiber cable to provide a best-in-class experience with maximum throughput and comfortable ergonomics" later this year.
Oculus Link will roll out in November.

MSI is readying an all-black X570 motherboard for builders tired of RGB

I don't think RGB fatigue is an official ailment, but if it ever becomes one, MSI's upcoming Meg X570 Unify motherboard could be a potential cure. It is an "all black beast" based on AMD's X570 chipset for Ryzen.
We only get a teaser shot of the motherboard, with MSI inviting users to "embrace the darkness." It looks like a promising option for an all-black build, and dark-themed cases are easy to come by these days. At the same time, I could also envision this inside an all-white chassis for a sort of tuxedo look.
Aesthetics aside, the full specs are not yet known, though three reinforced PCI Express x16 slots are clearly visible. There also appears to be onboard power and reset buttons, alongside an LED debug (so there technically is some lighting).
There's no mention of price or when the Meg X570 Unify will launch, only that it is coming soon. Presumably the dragon in the background is not included.

Windows 10 20H1 build 18990 now rolling out to Fast ring Insiders

This build brings a new setting to automatically restart UWP apps when signing back in.
Windows 10 20H1 build 18990 is now available for Fast ring Insiders. This update brings a couple of new features to the fore, but is mostly focused on bug fixes and performance improvements.
The most notable new feature is the ability to set UWP apps to automatically restart when signing back in to a PC. Microsoft rolled out this ability for registered desktop apps in a prior build, but it now works with UWP apps as well.
There are also some improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux and more. Here's a look at all of what's new and fixed in this build.
What's new in build 18990
Enabling automatic restart for UWP apps
Last month, we introduced a new separate setting to control if registered desktop apps from your previous sign-in session are restarted when signing back in to Windows. In the latest Insider Preview builds, in addition to registered desktop apps, when you opt into this setting, the majority of open UWP apps are now also automatically restarted as well! To reduce sign-in time, UWP apps are restarted minimized, in a suspended state, giving Windows and other apps more resources to get started.

Google Assistant comes to more Chromebooks with Chrome OS 77

When people think about simple laptops that can do the job, most people think about Chromebooks. After all, Chrome OS is a very simple, lightweight desktop OS that is mostly geared towards a user’s web experience over anything else. This has slowly been changing during the course of the past few years, with features such as support for Android apps, as well as the Google Play Store, being introduced to Chromebooks wide and large. The latest addition is something that has been available to some Chrome OS users: Google Assistant.
Google Assistant support was first introduced to Chrome OS with the original Pixelbook back in 2017, but it hasn’t really rolled out to any other non-Google Chromebook devices as of yet, remaining mostly exclusive to the Pixelbook and the Pixel Slate. Now, with Chrome OS 77, the Google Assistant is making its way to more Chromebooks, bringing with it all of its capabilities. For a while, you’ve been able to enable Google Assistant on supported Chromebooks by going into the Chrome flags menu and manually enabling the Google Assistant flag, but it will now be enabled by default on all Chromebooks receiving the update, as we previously reported.
With Google Assistant, you’ll be able to easily check on your schedule, set reminders, play music, open documents, and much more. You can quickly launch it by pressing the Search key + A. It has become one of the main parts of Google’s ecosystem, and with full Chrome OS support, it will now become much more capable. Chrome OS 77 doesn’t bring a lot more than that, aside from probably a few minor bug fixes, so if you were curious about trying out Google Assistant on your Chromebook but didn’t feel like messing around with system flags or beta features, then be sure to go ahead and download this update, which is now rolling out to supported Chromebooks.

Intel Ethernet 800 Series To Support NVMe over TCP, PCIe 4.0

Today at the SNIA Storage Developer Conference, Intel is sharing more information about their 100Gb Ethernet chips, first announced in April and due to hit the market next month. The upcoming 800 Series Ethernet controllers and adapters will be Intel's first 100Gb Ethernet solutions, and also feature expanded capabilities for hardware accelerated packet processing. Intel is now announcing that they have implemented support for the TCP transport of NVMe over Fabrics using the Application Device Queues (ADQ) technology that the 800 Series is introducing.
NVMe over Fabrics has become the SAN protocol of choice for new systems, allowing for remote access to storage with just a few microseconds of extra latency compared to local NVMe SSD access. NVMeoF was initially defined to support two transport protocols: Fibre Channel and RDMA, which can be provided by Infiniband, iWARP and RoCE capable NICs. Intel already provides iWARP support on their X722 NICs, and RoCEv2 support was previously announced for the 800 Series. However, in the past year much of the interest in NVMeoF has shifted to the new NVMe over TCP transport specification, which makes NVMeoF usable over any IP network without requiring high-end RDMA-capable NICs or other niche network hardware. The NVMe over TCP spec was finalized in November 2018 and opened the doors to much wider use of NVMe over Fabrics.
Software-based NVMe over TCP implementations can use any network hardware, but for the high-performance applications that were originally the focus of NVMe over Fabrics, hardware acceleration is still required. Intel's ADQ functionality can be used to provide some acceleration of NVMe over TCP, and they are contributing code to support this in the Linux kernel. This makes the 800 Series Ethernet adapters capable of using NVMe over TCP with latency almost as low as RDMA-based NVMe over Fabrics. Intel has also announced that Lightbit Labs, one of the major commercial proponents of NVMe over TCP, will be adding ADQ support to their disaggregated storage solutions.
Unrelated to NVMe over Fabrics, Intel has also announced that Aerospike 4.7 will be the first commercial database to make use of ADQ acceleration, and Aerospike will be publishing their own performance measurements showing improvements to throughput and QoS.
The Intel Ethernet Controller E810 and four 800 Series Ethernet adapters will be available from numerous distributors and OEMs over the next several weeks. The product brief for the E810 controller has been posted, and indicates that it supports up to a PCIe 4.0 x16 host interface—to be expected from a 100Gb NIC, but not something Intel PR is keen to highlight while their CPUs are still on PCIe 3.0.

Adobe's Fantastic iPad App for Drawing and Painting is Finally Available

Today Adobe has officially released Fresco for the iPad bringing an impressive set of drawing and interactive painting tools to Apple’s tablet, which will further help legitimise its use as a serious creative tool. The app was announced nearly a year ago in October of 2018, and we spent quite a bit of time with it ourselves last month.
The app is currently freely available to Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers or can be purchased as a standalone app for £9.50 a month with the first six-months free if you buy it before the end of the year. Adobe is also making it available free to use, but with a reduced toolset and output limited to the resolution of the iPad’s screen.
Besides bringing many of Adobe’s standard creativity tools to the iPad, Fresco can also access documents created in other Creative Cloud applications such as the desktop version of Photoshop. But the app’s most notable feature is its Live Brushes, created using the company’s AI-powered Sensei platform, that simulates the experience of painting with oil paints and watercolours, including colours that mix and bleed into each other as brush strokes are made on the simulated canvas.
The app does require some graphical horsepower to make those new painting tools feel completely interactive with real-time results, and as a result it requires iOS 12.2 or higher running on an iPad Pro, iPad Air 3, iPad Mini 5, and the 5th, 6th, and 7th-generation iPads. It fully supports touch gestures so you can paint with your fingers, but from our testing the Fresco experience is vastly improved when used with the Apple Pencil.

Heads up, Gigabyte just updated its gaming monitor warranty for the better

It doesn't seem like dead or stuck pixels on LCD monitors are as big of a problem as they once were (I don't have any data to back up this assumption, it's just an observation), but should you buy an Aorus model, Gigabyte now guarantees against them entirely.
Gigabyte recently revised its warranty policy with a new "Zero Bright Dot Guarantee," which is valid for the first year of ownership (from the date of original purchase). It applies to all six of its Aorus branded "tactical" gaming monitors, including the AD27QD, KD25F, FI27Q, FI27Q-P, CV27F, and CV27Q.
"Manufacturers in the industry normally offer warranty service [only] if a panel has at least 3 bright dots. Aorus believes that a conditional guarantee of up to 3 bright dots is not good enough. Only a pure and unyielding commitment to quality is suitable for our users," Gigabyte says.
Gigabyte is not the only one upping the ante in monitor warranties. So is AOC, and despite Gigabyte's claim of offering an "industry-leading warranty," AOC's is actually better.
I wrote about AOC's also-revised monitor policy around a month ago, but to recap, its new "Re-Spawned" warranty offers 4 years of coverage for its premium Agon models and 3 years for its G series gaming monitors. In both cases, a zero-dead pixel guarantee runs the length of the warranty. AOC also includes a one-time accidental damage claim during the first year of ownership, with advanced replacement service.
In contrast, Gigabyte backs its Aorus monitors for 3 years, but only offers the zero-dead pixel coverage for the first year. Other perks do not apply, such as accidental damage protection.
Still, it's nice to see monitor makers in general expanding their coverage and terms for gamers. AOC just appears to be the one to beat at the moment.

Microsoft announces plan to make the Xbox carbon neutral

Microsoft has joined other major tech companies such as Amazon, Googleand Sony in laying out some new commitments to mitigate climate change. One of the more eye-catching measures it detailed was a pilot project to make 825,000 Xbox consoles carbon neutral. It says those'll be the first carbon-neutral consoles.
"Microsoft's business operations have operated carbon neutral since 2012," chief environmental officer Lucas Joppa wrote in a blog post. "Today, we are beginning the journey of extending that to our products and devices." The Xbox pilot is the first stage of that project.
Joppa also affirmed Microsoft aims to reduce carbon emissions in its value and supply chain by at least 30 percent by 2030. The latest efforts it announced are part of its drive to be "even more ambitious than the Paris Accord targets, which mapped to a two-degree (Celcius) rise." The Science Based Target Initiative certified Microsoft's renewable energy target as being aligned with a 1.5-degree rise in future temperatures.
Additionally, Microsoft said it's continuing to expand its AI for Earthprogram. It recently released its first APIs and code under the program, which has more than 430 grantees in 71 countries tapping into the company's resources "to power new AI breakthroughs for the planet."
News of Microsoft's latest efforts follow an open letter that employees published last week, demanding more action on climate change. They called on the company to cancel its contracts with fossil fuel businesses, stop making contributions to climate change-denying politicians and lobbyists and commit to zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Meanwhile, the United Nations reported that 21 games industry companies (including Microsoft) have spelled out climate change commitments as part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance. Collectively, those efforts will lead to a "30 million-tonne reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, will see millions of trees planted, new 'green nudges' in game design and improvements to energy management, packaging and device recycling." Among the other companies involved are Sony, Google Stadia, Rovio, Supercell, Sybo, Twitch, Ubisoft and WildWorks.
Stadia, for instance, will release a Sustainable Game Development Guide and fund research on how developers can effectively integrate prompts for players to take green action into their games. Clash of Clans developer Supercell will offset its entire carbon footprint, while Rovio "has offset the carbon impact from their players charging their devices."
