While Apple AAPL -0.41%’s new iPhones contain some great secret features, the iPhone XS (details) and iPhone XS Max (details) are iterative devices with one major problem. And now the world’s most accurate Apple insider has revealed further frustration is on the way…
Picked up by MacRumors, a leaked presentation from acclaimed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals Apple will follow up its 2018 ‘S year’ with more of the same in 2019. He also puts the bullet into one of Apple’s most beloved iPhone models.
What Kuo reveals is that Apple has no plans to make any notable changes to the outward appearance of its 2019 iPhones. The 5.8-inch iPhone XS, 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max and 6.1-inch iPhone XR (details) will all be succeeded by models of identical size with the iPhone XS(S?) editions having OLED displays and the iPhone XR2 again being limited to LCD.
Moreover, Kuo states that Apple has no plans to introduce any additional sizes to the iPhone range in 2019 which means we can kiss goodbye to a successor to the much loved iPhone SE. It also means iPhone owners who prefer smaller devices will be limited to phones of 5.8-inches and above.
All of which is something of a surprise.
The iPhone X design will be in its third generation next year, and this year rivals have already shown they can deliver truly borderless and notch-less smartphones such as the Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X. Moreover, Samsung will radically redesign the Galaxy S10 next year and in-display fingerprint readers will be commonplace - a feature even the biggest Face ID fans would admit is useful to have.
Of course, iPhones are about more than design and the next-generation iPhones are already tipped to feature triple rear cameras, Face ID 2.0 hardware and Apple Pencil support.
That said, Apple under Tim Cook has already shown it is happy to sit on stale iPhone designs for up to four generations. So yes, the iPhone X design is nice but it’s not that nice…
