Microsoft is hard at work on the next generation of PCs. According to sources familiar with the work at hand, it’s time again to focus on dual-screen devices. That means two displays, one machine, and a nightmare for repair shops worldwide! The launch of this device is likely to be important enough to appear at its own event, hosted by Microsoft, focused on a single machine.
According to sources speaking with Windows Central, Microsoft’s been hard at work on this device for “about a year.” This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Microsoft working on a dual-screen “Surface” device, and it probably won’t be the last. It might be the first that they actually develop all the way to market – which would be a noted improvement over past attempts.
This newest version of the dual-screen Windows device is likely set to appear in the size and shape of a standard laptop. That’d mean we’re looking at something like the 2018 Lenovo Yoga Book C930, a dual-display notebook. That device had one display that was pretty much standard, and another that was made with E Ink. Microsoft’s device likely employs two touchscreen displays.
It’s been suggested that the smaller dual-screen project Andromeda was put “on hold” in favor of the Centaurus project. It’s been suggested that the Centaurus could be released as early as Fall 2019.
This device will likely be launched with two displays, while future iterations could possibly make use of folding display technology. A foldable display might launch with Samsung as the face of the tech for the industry – but such stuff will spread in years to come, to devices of all sorts.
Cross your fingers for devices more exciting than what’s been launched in the past – two screen devices of several sorts were launched over the past several years, and more often than not, they didn’t add up to much. Maybe the key rests in a more powerful OS?
